Own Your Secrets: Self-Hosting Bitwarden on a Raspberry Pi

Organizer: Jacksonville Linux Users Group - JaxLUG

Password managers protect the keys to your entire digital life — so who holds those keys, and on what terms? In this talk, we will walk through what it actually takes to self-host an open source password manager on hardware you control.

We’ll cover the zero-knowledge architecture that makes self-hosting safe, the deployment options available (including the lightweight Bitwarden Lite container that’s well-suited for ARM and low-resource environments), and the networking and operational decisions that separate a hobby setup from one you’d trust your family or team with.

The session includes a live deployment of Bitwarden on a Raspberry Pi, a tour of the command-line interface for power users, and an honest discussion of the tradeoffs, including when self-hosting isn’t the right answer. Attendees will leave with a working mental model, a reproducible setup, and the confidence to run their own vault.
