What If the Career You Haven't Considered Yet Is Already Here?

What If the Career You Haven't Considered Yet Is Already Here?

Behind the ships, aircraft and military installations we see across Northeast Florida is an enormous network of people keeping everything moving. One Jacksonville nonprofit is bringing military, industry and education together to make sure we’re ready for what comes next.

If you’ve lived in Jacksonville long enough, some things become so familiar that you stop wondering about them.

You see the ships. You drive past the military bases. You watch aircraft cross the sky. Containers move through the port and trucks head down the highway. It’s part of the landscape of living here.

But behind all that movement is another Jacksonville most of us rarely see.

There are people planning how equipment gets where it needs to go, technicians keeping aircraft ready, teams repairing ships, companies supplying parts, logistics professionals solving problems and educators preparing students for jobs that may not even be on their radar yet.

And all of those worlds depend on one another.

Helping them find one another is part of the work of the National Defense Transportation Association Jacksonville Chapter, or NDTA JAX, a Jacksonville nonprofit building relationships across Northeast Florida’s military, logistics, industry and education communities.

The name sounds serious because the work is serious. Strong supply chains help support military readiness and national security.

But here in Jacksonville, that mission starts with people.

Look Around Jacksonville. The Story Is Already Here.

It’s difficult to understand the scale of the opportunity until you put the pieces together. Northeast Florida’s military footprint includes Naval Station Mayport, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fleet Readiness Center Southeast, the 125th Fighter Wing, Blount Island Command, Marine Corps Support Facility Blount Island and Jacksonville’s Coast Guard Boat Forces. Just across the state line, Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia draws from the same First Coast talent pool.

Around them is another network of shipbuilders, manufacturers, transportation companies, suppliers, technology professionals and logistics teams whose work helps keep those operations moving.

A ship repair depends on parts arriving when they’re needed. New vessel construction depends on materials, skilled workers and suppliers. Deployment readiness depends on countless pieces coming together at the right time.

And right now, NDTA JAX says one of the biggest gaps in that system is workforce readiness.

Not enough of the conversation, then, can happen only among the people already doing the work.

Educators need to be there, too.

So do the people preparing to enter it.

Sometimes a Future Starts With Getting Into the Room

That idea came to life earlier this year at NDTA JAX’s inaugural Maritime Industrial Base Symposium at the University of North Florida.

MIB Symposium 1 MIB Symposium 2

Military leaders were there. Industry was there. Government and education were there.

And so were students.

NDTA JAX created opportunities for students from Edward H. White High School’s Global Logistics Academy and Beachside High School’s Academy of Global Logistics and Supply Chain to be part of the symposium alongside professionals already working in these fields.

Imagine being one of those students.

You’ve grown up seeing ships at Mayport or aircraft over Jacksonville, but now you’re sitting next to people who can tell you what happens behind everything you’ve been seeing.

Maybe you hear about a job you didn’t know existed. Maybe someone explains how the technology you’re interested in fits into maritime operations. Maybe a career that once sounded distant suddenly has a company name, a college program or a person you can talk to.

You don’t have to walk out knowing exactly what you want to do.

Sometimes curiosity is enough for a first step.

And for the professionals in the room, meeting those students can change the conversation too. “Workforce readiness” is no longer only a problem on a slide. The future workforce is sitting across the table.

That connection between education and industry has been building for years. NDTA JAX has supported the University of North Florida’s student-led Transportation & Logistics Society and reports contributing more than $30,000 since 2016 to UNF, JROTC programs in Duval and St. Johns counties and other Veteran organizations.

The next generation is one part of the story. The larger goal is making sure Northeast Florida has the relationships, knowledge and people needed to support the defense and logistics work already happening here.

The Conversation Is Coming Back to Jacksonville

The inaugural MIB Symposium didn’t close that conversation. It opened it.

On October 16, NDTA JAX will return to the University of North Florida for its Mini-MIB Educational Breakfast Symposium, this time bringing the education and workforce conversation even closer to the center.

Military and industry leaders know what capabilities they’ll need. Educators understand the students and programs that could help build them. Put those people in separate rooms and the gaps remain. Put them together and something can begin to move.

A school learns about an industry need it can help address.

A business discovers a program already preparing students.

An educator meets someone who can open a door.

A young person begins to understand that the opportunities surrounding them in Jacksonville aren’t only things they’ll drive past on the way to somewhere else.

They could be part of their future.

That’s the kind of connection NDTA JAX is trying to build—not once at a symposium, but across a community.

Now NDTA JAX Needs People for Its Own Next Chapter

There’s a certain symmetry in an organization spending so much time thinking about the next generation while preparing for a transition of its own.

NDTA JAX expects a significant leadership change in 2027, and its most important need right now is people: volunteers and future board members willing to continue the chapter’s mission.

For someone who has built a career in Jacksonville’s military, logistics, transportation, maritime, education or business community, this could be a chance to put that experience somewhere it matters. Years spent working in these fields come with relationships, lessons and knowledge of this region that can help NDTA JAX continue connecting the people who need to know one another.

And that’s really what runs through this entire story.

Somewhere in Jacksonville, a student is wondering what comes next. An educator is looking for opportunities to put in front of that student. An industry or military leader is thinking about the people they’ll need in the years ahead. And an experienced professional may be ready to give something back.

NDTA JAX is creating a place for those paths to cross.

All of it is happening right here, behind the ships we see, the aircraft overhead and the gates we drive past every day.

Sometimes discovering what’s happening in your own city makes you see it differently.

NDTA JAX gives us a reason to look again.
